Choosing Book and Reading Aloud to Children

內容摘要:

-Choose the book that you like: Read a variety of books to find the one you really like because getting books that you like helps communicate your enthusiasm and enthusiasm can be contagious to your kids.

-Choose the book that is appropriate for the age group that you’re reading to:
For very young, pre-school children: books with simple text and pictures, themes with rhyme, rhythm, and predicted ability.

For kids age 4-6: interesting story line, something is going on in their life, anything they can relate to their daily life, animals…
For older kids: nice chapter books, don’t finish the story till they want to finish it themselves

-Appropriate story length: break up a long story a little bit
-Test your children’s language ability: Feel free to stop if you find a new word that you think your kids might not understand. Never change the text on the book and take some time to explain a new word to them.

-Remember children read the pictures: So you want pictures that support the story and you want pictures that help children to understand the story.

-Choose big books: Make sure the book is big enough that allow children to appreciate it. All the illustration must be seen and appreciated by the group.

-Choose hardback books: Hardback books are much easier to hold than paper back books.

-Practice: Read the book first, make sure the story flows well and the words flow well and you’re familiar with the story line.

-Some books just don’t read aloud well: ex. Beginning to read books that usually have very short sentences and very simple plot.

-Put your book in one spot, and avoid wiping around the book. If the group is very large and you need to take the time to show the picture, do it very slowly.

-Gain children’s attention: Give the children a little time to settle down and feel comfortable. Beginning only when you have all their attention, and their eyes are focus on you. Introducing yourself, doing a little song, a little finger play could be helpful to get their attention.

-Introduce the book: Make you state the title of the book, and the author and the illustrator. It will be helpful to run your finger alone the bottom of the letters as you read the title, the author and the illustrator. It could help the kids to pick up that you are reading those letters.

-Be careful of asking question: Make sure that the question relates to the story and you can keep focus on the story.

-Slow down: Make sure you don’t rush through the story.

-To have little song or body movement between the story.
